Licensed psychotherapist in San Diego helping you understand and heal the patterns underneath the pain through experiential, body-oriented therapy.
My work is relational, non-pathologizing, somatically informed, and deeply attuned to moment-to-moment experience.
As the only PBSP-certified (Pesso Boyden System Psychomotor) therapist on the West Coast, I help clients slow down enough to notice what is happening not only emotionally and cognitively, but also somatically. This experiential process allows us to work directly with the patterns themselves, rather than only talking about them.
I help clients track and understand the emotional and attachment-based patterns that are carried in the nervous system and expressed through body cues, symptoms, and relational dynamics. Together, we work to transform these patterns at their source so that change is not only understood, but deeply felt and integrated.
My experience, having Maya as my therapist was truly helpful in my grief journey. I am a widow with two sons; losing my husband is the hardest thing I’ve ever been through. Not knowing how to navigate those waters and trusting myself, and the process of grief was unimaginable.
Maya was the person I looked forward to speaking to every week while going through my early stages of grief. She truly helped me in ways I wasn’t able to understand until now.
Doing therapy was, at times, predictably hard. But with Maya therapy was also, at times, joyful, creative, and dare I say, fun? Maya radiates warmth, empathy, and intellect and for the first time in my life, I felt truly seen and validated. I’m very grateful and proud of the work we accomplished together and today, I’m a happier, healthier person because of it. Thank you Maya!
I came to Maya after losing all of my immediate family over several years. When my dad died, the grief and the overwhelming responsibilities that followed felt like too much to carry. Maya helped me work through my sadness, anxiety, and depression with compassion and support, and find my way forward.
My time in therapy with Maya brought lasting change and freedom. She was able to sit with me and provide a compassionate space where I was able to unpack the things of my past that were disrupting my life in the present. I will always be grateful for her guiding me through the deep inner soul work that was needed so that I could experience true healing.
Maya Heffernan is an exceptional psychotherapist. I say this not as her client, but as her teacher, supervisor, and now colleague. One quality I admire most is her openness to learning. Maya approaches every person with genuine curiosity, without assumptions, creating space for deep understanding and authentic connection. I’ve seen this quality consistently in her clinical work. She has a remarkable ability to meet people where they are, and I believe anyone who works with Maya will feel deeply understood and grateful to have her as their therapist.
Psychotherapist, Supervisor, and President, United States PBSP Association
I confidently refer clients to Maya because I have complete trust in the care they will receive. She approaches every person with thoughtfulness, integrity, and genuine compassion. Maya has a remarkable ability to help people recognize strengths they may not yet see in themselves while creating a space where they feel understood, safe, and supported. She also knows how to gently challenge clients with warmth and clarity, helping them grow without losing sight of their humanity. I recommend her wholeheartedly.

No, I don’t accept insurance. Many plans allow for out of network providers and will reimburse you. I can provide receipts for that purpose.
Using health insurance can make therapy more accessible, and for many people it’s a helpful option. It’s also important to understand how it works so you can make the choice that feels right for you. Most insurance plans require a mental health diagnosis to cover therapy. This diagnosis becomes part of your medical record and is shared with your insurance company for billing. While your information is still protected under privacy laws like HIPAA, it is not as fully private as out-of-pocket therapy.
In some cases, mental health history may be considered when applying for life or disability insurance. Because of this, some clients choose to pay privately for greater privacy, flexibility, and freedom from a required diagnosis. Ultimately, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach—just the option that best supports you.
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.
